In 2014, the Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Inclusion Team merged to form Additional Educational Needs Team (AEN). In light of the new SEND Code of practice (2014), we sought to ensure that all Long Field students, whether, SEN, Vulnerable or at risk, have access to the best opportunities in order to meet challenges and overcome them in a positive and holistic way.
As a small academy we pride ourselves on knowing each students as an individual and provision for students with additional educational needs at Long Field is comprehensive. Staff at Long Field pride themselves in providing Quality First Teaching through differentiation, effective feedback and marking systems in all lessons. Our dedicated team of Teaching Assistants are assigned to specific Curriculum Areas so that they can gain subject specific knowledge to enhance the experience of AEN students within the classroom, allowing all students to access the mainstream curriculum. Resources are adapted and lessons differentiated to ensure all students make good progress, including those with additional educational needs. For students with an EHCP (Statement), support will be allocated according to individual needs within a subject area using progress data as a way of monitoring the support required.
We also support students overall health and well-being, recognising that these are the foundations of academic success. Our welfare/pastoral team liaise closely with key staff, students and parents as well as access to outside agencies that include the school nurse, counselling service, educational psychologist, youth workers, CAMHS and family support workers. Advice, support and guidance also comes through the development of breakfast and lunchtime clubs, activities that encourage greater self-esteem or self-awareness, anger management and anxiety. Individual or group mentoring sessions are established as required and monitored for effectiveness during and after intervention.
Students who qualify for Pupil Premium funding receive a specialised package of support and opportunities individualised to their needs. 'Closing the Gap' continues to be a central part of the work we do at Long Field ensuring that our students from disadvantaged backgrounds are fully supported to accelerate their progress (please see our Pupil Premium section).
The Additional Educational Needs department operates an open door policy for all students and parents.
